2. LCD (IPS/VA):
Is OLED Burn-in Still a Thing? OLED vs. LCD
You look at an OLED monitor online—the colors pop, the blacks are deep—and you want it. But then, the ghost of "Burn-in" haunts you. Is OLED really that fragile? Is LCD still a viable choice?
1. OLED: Staring into the Abyss
OLED pixels are "self-emissive." To display black, they simply turn off. So OLED black is "True Black," not the "glowing dark grey" of LCDs.
- Pros: Movies and AAA games (especially horror games) look stunning. The response time is insanely fast.
- The Cost: Organic materials degrade. If you display static elements (like the Windows taskbar or a game HUD) for too long, those pixels age faster than others, leaving a permanent ghost image. That's burn-in.
2. LCD (IPS/VA): The Reliable Workhorse
LCD is like a Toyota Corolla. It has a backlight that's always on, and liquid crystals block the light to create images.
- Pros: Virtually immune to burn-in. You can leave a spreadsheet open 24/7 without anxiety.
- Cons: Blacks aren't perfect (backlight bleed), and contrast ratios can't compete with OLED.
Verdict: Which Gamer Are You?
Modern OLED tech has improved significantly (with pixel shift and auto-dimming features), and 3-5 years of usage is common.
- Coding / Office Work: Get an LCD. Don't stress your wallet. Static Word documents are OLED killers.
- Gaming / Movies: Go OLED. Once you see that picture quality, you can't go back. It's worth the risk.
Worried about screen defects?
Whether OLED or LCD, always check your new monitor for dead pixels and uniformity issues.
